Rocky Run Stream Valley Park
Fairfax County Park Authority
Centreville, VA

This trail runs along Big Rocky Run through Rocky Run Stream Valley Park. I describe the trail from northeast to southwest, bounded on the east by Ellanor C. Lawrence Park and on the south by Cub Run. I provide two options for getting to Cub Run, both require some running on the roads.

Approximate Distance: 1 to 2 miles
Surface: About 1/2 dirt/gravel trails and 1/2 road/asphalt trails

Location of trailheads
Eastern trailhead - ADC Map 12, H-9
Western trailhead - ADC Map 11, G-9

If you wish to continue running from the trail described as Big Rocky Run East, then begin at the pond across from Cabell's Mill at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Follow Big Rocky Run upstream from the pond until you reach a series of four large culverts that pass under Sully Road (Route 28).

Enter the culverts (I prefer the one on the far right) and cross under Route 28. You must get your feet wet, but you find a section of fairly isolated trail that continues to follow Big Rocky Run and leads to Braddock Road. Stay close to the creek and mostly follow animal trails. Consider wearing some long pants if you prefer to run this segment of the trail.

The path emerges south of the intersection of Cedar Break Drive and Braddock Road and north of the intersection of Newton and Braddock Road. Cross Braddock Road and turn left, crossing over Big Rocky Run.

Run to the intersection at Newton Patent Drive, which is the entrance to the Newgate residential community. This intersection provides a good trailhead for those not interested in covering the ECL Park to Braddock Road section of the trail.

Follow Newton Patent Drive for a few yards, turning right into the woods before reaching the tennis courts at the local clubhouse. When you see a Fairfax County Park Authority sign, at the far side of community center, you have found the right path.

The path climbs up a ridge so that you overlook Big Rocky Run on your right (north) side. The trail skirts a residential community to the left for almost a mile.

When you reach a road, Awbrey Patent Drive and must make a decision:

  • Continue following Big Rocky Run to a dead end / turnaround
  • Follow roads for about ½ mile to connect with Cub Run trails

If you choose to continue to follow Big Rocky Run, you can expect another ½ mile of dirt and gravel trail. This section of the trail ends behind the Brookridge apartments leasing office on Havener House Way. This is near the intersection of Havener House Way and Newton Patent Drive, and provides an alternate trailhead for entering the trail system.

To connect with the Cub Run trails, turn right at Awbrey Patent Drive and cross Big Rocky run. You must now follow the road and then asphalt trail for about a mile before getting back to dirt trail.

Awbrey Patent Drive crosses Stone Road and turns into Sully Park Drive. After crossing Stone Road, find the asphalt path that leads down to the left after the fourth road on the left (Kamputa Drive). The asphalt path can be found diagonal to the Sully II Community Center.

Follow the asphalt path to a small playgound. Turn right onto the dirt path that leads into a meadow, entering Cub Run Stream Valley Park. Stay on the dirt path until you reach Cub Run. Turn left at Cub Run, following dirt path.
