WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR?

 • When the callus is painful.

 • When you have diabetes or circulatory problems, and you need to make you remove a callus.

 • When the site of callus is red and hot.

 • When the callus opens, crack or bleeding.

 • When the callus turns blue.
 What show symptoms

The callus is a product that shield your skin, a way to defend themselves against too much pressure. And this shield done a good job, "said Ellen Cohen-Sobel, DPM, Ph.D., assistant professor of orthopedic Podology podiatry College of New York, New York City. Think how the fingers of a guitar player or how the palms of an Olympic gymnast would react if they were not protected by thick calluses. They have badly. In fact, they probably bleed.

Similarly, some calluses thin, well positioned on your feet, can provide little protection when you walk barefoot on the beach or Running a Marathon. But those calluses are not only caused by pressure on your feet. The problem may be hereditary. "The underlying cause of calluses on feet is hereditary, said Mark D. Sussman, DPM, podiatrist in private practice in Wheaton, Maryland and co-author of The Family Foot-Care Book. In fact, parents convey the instability of their feet to their children, he says. If you inherit a poor mechanism, move your feet instead of being stable when hit the pavement. "And this constant friction is the cause calluses.

"The calluses as the ones under the feet are often irritating but rarely painful," says Dr. Cohen-Sobel. The most important exception, which is also painful callus is a deeper and smaller whose outline is clear (plantar keratosis). "This remark often white and deep in the center surrounded by a party that has clear air of a gap," says Dr. Cohen-Sobel.
 Symptom Relief

"If you live with your calluses for several years and they do not bother you, leave them alone," recommends Dr. Cohen-Sobel. "The spread thin calluses on the soles of the feet and do not cause health problems," said Howard Dananberg, podiatrist and director of the clinic walking in Bedford, New Hampshire. "When calluses are concentrated in one place is different, especially if they become painful," says Dr. Dananberg. Is that the body tries to protect a place by making more protective skin and hard. To interrupt this cycle, remove the callus. Here is what you can do for pain releif.

Sand it. "You can control calluses at home in Ponca," advises Dr. Sussman. First, wash your feet, then let them soak for 20 minutes in a pool of warm water added two tablespoons of liquid dishwashing soap mild. Then rub the callus with vegetable oil until it has softened, about one minute. Finally, with a pumice stone, a fine sandpaper or a file to calluses, sand it. "Stop before the place became too sensitive, ie one or two minutes," warns Dr. Cohen-Sobel.
Protect it. "To remove the pressure in areas favorable to the development of calluses, cut a hole slightly larger than the size of the callus in a piece of adhesive moleskine, found in pharmacies. Place the pillow-shaped donut around the callus and fill the hole in Vaseline, "says Dr. Sussman. Then cover the callus gauze. Make sure that your podiatrist approves the method you use.

Avoid acidic. "The solutions to remove calluses sold on the market contain acids that can burn skin," says Dr. Dananberg. Dr. Sussman is in agreement and warns that such a solution can also cause infection.

Wear good shoes. "Bad shoes can cause calluses, but they can worsen," said Dr. Sussman. "The feet widen with age, especially among women who had children, he says. Do not therefore enter the shoes you wear the previous year. And if your shoes hurt you after not having brought a few hours at home, share them.
Entrust your feet in the hands of your doctor. "The only person who can remove or cut your calluses with a sharp instrument is the chiropodist – especially not you nor your beautician – says Dr. Cohen-Sobel. Never use a razor or scissors to cut a callus, advises she, you could easily cause infection or worse. "

"A callus serious – as plantar keratosis – could require medical treatment fortnightly or monthly. In many cases, the doctor may limit your visits to you requiring a sole specifically designed to redistribute your weight, "says Dr. Sussman. Ultimately, we can correct the serious problems callus through surgery. However, be sure to get a second opinion before consenting to them.
