Categories Of Periodontal Surgery To Reduce Dental Pockets

Posted on Friday, August 1, 2008 in Health Topics

In severe cases of periodontal or gum disease, the dentist may refer the dental patient to a periodontist – a gum specialist specializing in periodontal procedures and gum disease treatments. Upon the periodontal visit, the periodontist will generally asses the dental patient for periodontal surgery or surgical procedures to highly reduce the forming of periodontal pockets, mainly to make it possible to maintain oral hygiene himself and to eliminate oral bacteria as well. Other than scaling and root planing, there are three general categories of pocket elimination surgeries that are first considered before the periodontist performs them and these include: gingivectomy, apically repositioned flap and functional and aesthetic grafting techniques.
